DIY: Mason Jar Room Freshener

I don't know about you, but I think that weekend just moved wayyyyy too fast!

Being the die hard "DIY junkie" that I am, I'm always on the hunt for some fun and easy projects that actually look nice when you finish them. If you remember this blog post from last week, I included some really neat DIY mason jar room air fresheners.

Happy "almost" weekend!

After posting this photo on Instagram today, I realized that besides clearly being addicted to the color green, I am pretty much a creature of habit.........are you?

You know the type......you find yourself doing the same things over and over again, but do you stop and think why? I took a little bit of time today to ponder this notion and came to the conclusion that I repeat things over and over again because:  A) I like it..... B) it's easy.... C) it just works.

2016: The Year of Simple

Reflecting on 2015, I have come to the conclusion that my new word for the New Year is : Simple.
Simple life, simple fun, simple home decor.

Painted Fox Design Series: Rustic Farmhouse Baskets

Happy Thursday friends!

Some girls have an addiction to shoes or handbags, mine falls more under the category of baskets.
Big ones, small ones, wicker, metal, rustic, farmhouse........if "basket" is in the product title, I'm more than likely to snatch it up and bring it home.

Baskets are so much fun......they can be used in such a wide array of ways, from displaying holiday decor, stacking dishes for serving, even using them in your outdoor garden spaces.

Benjamin Moore 2016 Color of the Year

I'm not sure about you, but I was "over the moon" when I heard the news that the Benjamin Moore Color of the Year is "Simply White".

 
2015 was the year that I turned my home from "builder beige" into a white wonderland. I had my home built and never really gave the paint color a second thought until I realized that dark beige gets old.......fast. It doesn't really lend itself well to a more neutral decor color palette. I spent a good part of the year rolling up my sleeves, grabbing my white paint can and the transformation began. I was able to re-paint my entire kitchen, Great Room and main entry hallway a beautiful shade of white.

I know that I say it every week, but you can't imagine how much fun I'm having introducing these new and unique Painted Fox items picked especially for you!

And then it happened......these Farmhouse Zinc Bowls came into my life. When these beauties arrived, I truly pulled them out of their box and stared.....and stared....and this went on for about a half hour.

I just could not get over their true beauty!

I don't know about you, but I am super excited that Fall has finally arrived! Even if you live in a warmer climate, you have to agree with me...... there's just something special about decorating your home this time of year. For me, it's the official kickoff to the upcoming Holiday season and that just puts a big ole smile on my face.
I'm crazy for textures, I love the mix of vibrant and neutral colors, and of course, the pumpkins! Who doesn't love pumpkins? Big one, little ones....I want them all.

~How to Use Lavender in Your Home~

Farmhouse Mason Jar Basket Set @ Painted Fox Treasures

Hello lavender lover!

I know you love lavender as much as I do, especially this time of year. Its the perfect rustic addition to display in your Fall vignettes, not to mention the scent is OUT OF THIS WORLD!

We were fortunate to have some new landscaping installed this past Spring and I made sure lavender plants were definitely part of that equation. I love the color, the scent, and thankfully its a great bunny repellent! So far so good on the rabbits......they don't care for strong scents so hopefully I stay "in the clear".
Did you know that lavender not only grows in various shades of purple, but in blue, white, red and pink as well? I think I'm going to keep my eyes open for some white lavender to plant next Spring!

My Love of Vintage Dough Bowls

I'm not sure about you, but I'm willing to admit that I have had an obsession with antique vintage dough bowls for the past few years. And by obsession, I mean dragging my fiance to countless flea markets & antique shops on the weekends to hunt down the perfect bowl.

I would make it a point to ask the sellers in advance if they had any vintage dough bowls upon entering their stores, and most just looked at me like I had three heads.
C'mon people, there's a vintage bowl movement out there and everyone is trying to get their hot little hands on one! If I did find an authentic bowl I liked, it was either the wrong size, it was cracked right down the middle, or the price exceeded the amount I would get if I sold a kidney (and I like my kidneys!)

~How to add Farmhouse Style to Your City Home~

Please don't get me wrong....I absolutely love my home, (but if I could trade my newer built "sub division" home for a farmhouse beauty like my friend Lauren has)....I would do it in a heartbeat!

Lauren lives with her husband Brett, and cute little son Baker, in this gorgeous 100 year old Alabama farmhouse. They took on the ultimate DIY challenge last September by purchasing their new farmhouse, and I have loved watching the amazing transformation.
I just swoon over all the charm & character!

Tuesday Tours: Industrial Style!

Happy Tuesday friends, and welcome to this weeks edition of Spindle & Rye "Tuesday Tours"!
This week it's all about industrial style, and I couldn't think of a better friend to feature than Allison from A House and a Dog. If you're looking for industrial decor inspiration, Allison is your "go to girl". Allison lives in California with her better half Joe, and their sweet little fur baby "Scooby".

She has a great sense of style, loves decorating, design, crafting and DIY projects.
Definitely my kinda girl!

We had our house built last year and it was the most exciting and stressful time of our lives. But of course, it was all worth it in the end! We live in a quiet little cul de sac, in a small town in California. Bright and sunshiny days are my favorite!

Ever since I was a little girl I wanted a house with a red door. So of course as soon as the builder showed us the exterior color options, I immediately chose it before even looking at the other choices! We love sitting out on the front patio with our dog, Scooby

Come on in! This sign is a DIY, made with a burlap canvas and a craft decal.

Our floor plan is very open, so our entry way is fairly large. This vintage inspired box is a great place to drop our keys & sunglasses. And I'm always reminded that it's a wonderful life!

Another great reminder before leaving the house! This is my favorite pillow from Loving Leigh Yours. I love supporting small business and Amanda is a doll.

Our great room - we do everything here! It's our media room, game room, living room, den, family room, dining room, breakfast nook, and kitchen all in one.
I wouldn't have it any other way!

I created this little reading nook in the corner and the pouf is the dogs favorite spot to lay and look out the patio window.

Behind our couch is one of my favorite DIY projects. This sofa table was inspired by a $600 piece, that we built for about $20. It's the perfect spot for our drinks and the remote!

The dining room is my favorite room of the house. We kept our old table and I re-stained it to match our new decor.

The chandelier was only $79 and completely changed the look of the whole room.

My Target shelves are also a fav, and I love changing up the decor on them. The grocery sign is also a DIY.

These farm animal prints are another small shop favorite from Haley at Little Bits of Everything Inc. I loved these and just knew they had to be in my house!

Our kitchen is on the small side, but 3 people can still fit without bumping into each other. We don't cook much, but anytime we have a get together or a party, the large breakfast bar is always full of food and people!

Just off the kitchen is a small hallway that had an awkward angled wall. The builder offered extra cabinetry, but with our budget it just wasn't an option we could upgrade. Now, I'm so glad we didn't!

I took that awkward space and made myself a little office. I love sitting here and writing my blogs and browsing Pinterest.

The shelving is another DIY using brackets from Lowe's and left over wood from our sofa table project. Another small shop favorite is Dawn from Eventually Cottage and her awesome family flashcard.

Another awesome space just for me! In our guest bedroom, I use the walk in closet as a craft room. It's just big enough for a desk and a chair, so all my supplies and storage are on the wall. I love that I can come in here start a project and if I don't finish, I just close the door!

Our laundry room is another one of my favorite spots in the house. This sign is a DIY made from a canvas, a decal, and some scrap wood.

Okay so I might have a shelf obsession, but these were another DIY and an alternative to an expensive builder upgrade. We added lower cabinetry in the laundry room, but couldn't afford the uppers. I found the brackets on sale at Target for $5 and used some old fence boards.

Our master bedroom is a work in progress, but Scooby doesn't mind.

I've been collecting some of my favorite decor to create a gallery wall full of love quotes and pictures of us.

The back patio is another one of our favorite hangouts. We love to sit and talk while the dog plays outside. Joe is also an avid gardener, and we BBQ every weekend. I wanted this outdoor space to be just as comfortable as the inside.

Tuesday Tours: Farmhouse Style!

Welcome to the first edition of Spindle & Rye "Tuesday Tours"
I'm super excited to be adding this weekly feature to my blog, because if you are like me, you love getting a little "sneak peek" into the homes of some of your favorite bloggers and Instagram friends.

I couldn't be happier to kick off this new series by showcasing the home of my super special friend, Daraka McCrackin. Daraka lives in Oklahoma, is married to her high school sweetheart, and is a stay at home Mom to three sweet little girls.

Daraka and I met through Instagram about a year ago and we have been great friends ever since. Do you know how you just instantly connect with someone? Daraka loves to antique, shop at thrift stores, and have fun with DIY projects. We love the same farmhouse/industrial decor, have the same sense of humor, and we talk on the phone and text each other about 50 times a day. It's been so fun getting to know her and I'm thrilled every time she mentions "do you wanna do a DIY project together"?

If you're not already following her on Instagram, I can honestly say you are missing out! I'm sure you will love her and her home as much as I do!

Yea, I'd say this sister is my #soulsister.

Our home was originally built by my husbands grandparents. They were the first to build in this area back in the 60's. As a result our last name is the same as the street we live on.
We are currently in the process of renovating our basement. 

I repurposed this old window into a photo frame in our entryway. 

I found this old accordion hanger at a thrift shop for 50 cents. I took these old galvanized buckets and stenciled numbers on them and filled them with vintage maps. 

This old igloo water cooler houses outdoor items like chalk and jump ropes for my girls. We store shoes in the basket and use the hooks for small coats. 

My family gallery wall in my living room is my favorite. I found all the frames except for the 3 big ones at garage sales and thrift shops. I painted them to better fit my style. 

This is my spot in my living room. This side table was part of a rattan furniture set that we inherited. I love the uniqueness of it. The bottom shelf holds small games for family night. 

Our mantle is probably my favorite thing we have added to our home. It is from a old barn in the 1800's. It still has the sawmill marks on it which I love. 

My collection of old whiskey jugs sit on the other side of the mantle. 

My bookshelves house all my favorite vintage items that I found at antique shops and flea markets, and an old wire basket holds vintage quilts. 

My dining room has quickly became my favorite room to sit in. I love it all from my collection of milk glass to my French linen stripe bench I found at a vintage market. 

I found the "apothecary" sign at the same vintage market I found my bench. 

We keep a growth chart on the wall that my husband made for me to measure all my girls throughout the years. 

This gallery wall in my dining room is made with more unique items. From a ruler made into a letter "M" to the display case of arrowheads my husband has found, every piece has special meaning behind them. 

This gallery wall is in our hallway. It is made entirely with thrift store pictures and frames. 

I found this top Native American picture in our house after we bought it. It is drawn entirely with pencil. 

I love decorating our home with unique and thrifted items. I found this old painting hanging in a garage. A little clean up and it made the perfect addition to our small bedroom. 

With our home being older and small our three girls share two bedrooms. For that reason I keep their decor minimal and functional.  

I found these shelves on clearance for 1 dollar each. I bought the polka dot ribbon and added it to the front to make them cuter. 

This is a small desk area I created for them to work on their homework. Their rooms had sliding wood closet doors which I painted with chalk paint. 

I painted our cabinets a dark grayish blue then went over with a glaze. I wiped the glaze as I went making a worn look.  Our countertops are concrete and were installed with a rough edge. I absolutely love them. 

I wanted something unique for my cafe curtains so I bought a vintage grain sack and cut it at the seams. 

This is the view from our back deck and our kitchen. Living on the lake has its perks!
